The interesting thing about a recent poll to discover the world's best poker player....
THE QUIET ASSASSIN In a recent American poll Phil Ivey was voted by a clear margin to be the viewing public’s choice as the World’s Best Poker Player! Eric Lindgren and Daniel Negreneau came in as second and third. However, it was the number four position that interested me. Allen Cunningham has long been a player I have admired. He is in stark contrast to a lot of the “brash and bling” that goes with the young super stars of his generation. He is a deep and thoughtful player who refuses to be rushed. His nickname of the “Quiet Assassin” has been well earned with no less than four World Series of Poker bracelets to his credit and an earnings total to date of $8,000,000. He has very little to do with sponsorship, is always polite and keeps very much to himself. He let’s his game do the talking. Allen can play across a whole variety of styles of poker and is as comfortable playing Stud as he is Texas Hold’em or Omaha. He has talent in-depth. Watch out for him on televised events when you get the chance. Ivey is certainly the Best Player in the World dollar-for-dollar at the moment but Cunningham is the one to watch. He took fourth place at this year’s WSOP Main Event pulling in another multi-million dollar payout and providing $12,000,000 man Jamie Gold with his only serious competition at the final table. Watch out for the “Assassin” in 2007!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Q: What is a “bet slider”? A: In no-limit and pot-limit games a bet slider is an on-screen device that enables you to use your mouse to drag a bar across a slider to declare the exact amount of your bet.
Q: What is an “action marker”? A: This is a graphic element in an online Texas Hold’em game that indicates which player at the table is required to take the next action. It indicates whose “turn” it is.
Q: What’s the biggest danger with becoming an online poker player? A: An excellent question and if you have the common sense to ask it you should be able to handle the answer very well. A lot of players who run into trouble are players who win quite a lot or quite often (or both) very early on. Just the problem you’re looking for, right? Wrong! Winning early on can breed unreasonable optimism in a certain type of person. This can lead to problems when a losing phase is encountered. What you need to develop as a player is a mature understanding of the “long run”. Never bet outside of your comfort zone. Never chase by doubling up if that takes you outside of your comfort zone. Poker is simply about enjoying yourself and winning more times than you lose. This isn’t possible in most forms of gambling but because poker requires an element of skill and experience it becomes possible. The proof lies in the simple fact that you see the same top professional names appearing in the money in tournaments all over the world. Are they just lucky? Of course not. They lose. They win. They just win more times than they lose and that’s because they have developed reasonable optimism.
