BEATING BOREDOM You will seldom find me recommending multi-table play in this column. In fact I usually advise readers to target people they have reason to think are multi-tabling. Interestingly, a player for whom I have a lot of respect, remarked to me the other day that there was a good reason to multi-table as far as he was concerned. His point was that multi-tabling enabled him to play a very straightforward game (only playing premium hole cards).
FOLLOW THE LOGIC Earlier in his professional playing career he had noticed how he was becoming increasingly annoyed sometimes having to wait fifteen to twenty minutes to get the kind of premium hand he was happy to get behind. This boredom and irritation frequently lead to him playing sub-standard hole cards and running into trouble and out of money. For this reason he took up multi-tabling big time, giving himself several more chances per twenty minutes of landing premium hands.
IT’S NOT FOR EVERYONE He agrees with me that you really have to focus to pull these multiple rabbits out of the hat. This is especially true if you’re on (get this) four tables at once! It’s what I call juggling with live chainsaws. Some of you however, with similar boredom thresholds, will find this theory compelling and may well be able to make it work for you. This will certainly be the case if you can identify with the boredom factor leading you to act compulsively with hole cards that aren’t really up to it when you have restricted yourself to playing one table at a time.
POKER IS ABOUT PERSONALITIES I guess it comes down to horses for courses. If you can make it work for you, good luck. Poker is all about alternative strategies and finding what suits your personality but protects your wallet at the same time. If you have a view please feel free to express it on dailystarpoker.com with examples from your own experience.
POKER TIP OF THE DAY If you read the poker forums it’s interesting to note how many new players have a degree of success online and within a few days upgrade themselves to higher limit play. This is almost always a mistake and can lead to a bad experience which puts them off playing for quite a while. It needs to be understood that “limits” don’t just define a person’s financial “means”. More often that not it defines their level of experience. Don’t fight above your weight until you’ve dominated the level you’re on for at least a few weeks.
