RENDER UNTO CAESAR History repeats itself. “Jesus” Ferguson was brought to his knees at Caesar’s Palace in a classic “heads up” crowning glory to a tournament of biblical proportions starring just about every major star in the poker firmament. At an ungodly hour on the final day the NBS National Heads Up Championship reached its climax. Here’s what happened going into the final straight.
BAPTISM OF FIRE In the last three matches of the championship event, Chris “Jesus” Ferguson went one-on-one with Ted Forrest. The players started out with $640,000 in chips and the blinds set at $5,000-$10,000 going into the first round. Two rounds down and Forrest held a 4-1 lead with over $1,000,000 in chips.
MIRACLE NEEDED Only a miracle could save Ferguson and he produced not one but two! He doubled up TWICE and cut Forrest’s lead back to a minimal $60,000. Within thirty minutes, Ferguson was AHEAD and went all-in with Ace and nine of hearts. Forrest called and brandished his pocket tens. King of clubs Jack of hearts and seven of diamonds hit the flop and Forest re-took the lead. Another miracle at the river gave Ferguson a pair of Aces. Chris steamed into the second session winning six of the first seven hands only to have Forrest back with a 2-1 chip lead by the end of the first round. It was clear it would take the third and final round to decide the championship.
AN UNHOLY 666 Forrest pulled off a massive pot to take a $290,000 lead going into round three. The blinds were now $15,000-$30,000 and each player fought back and forth until their individual stacks were amazingly back into balance. In a crucial game Forrest won a gigantic pot with a “set” of sixes which took him to over $1,000,000. Forrest kept pole position until both players went all-in before the flop, Forest with King-Jack and Ferguson with Queen-seven. Forrest made three Kings by the river and poker’s only Messiah was off for a late supper. For the second year running, Chris “Jesus” Ferguson was runner up with a $250,000 pay off for his sins. Forrest took $500,000 but, as always, Caesar was the real winner with a vast TV audience of millions having enjoyed every thrilling moment of a star studded and memorable tournament.
