WISDOOMED UNFORTUNATELY A lot of supposedly helpful information about poker is often hard to get a handle on. Living in Marbella I was lucky enough to be invited to the home of one of Spain’s best poker players who proceeded to share a whole heap of his knowledge with me. Unfortunately it was about as useful as a leaf-blower at full blast as I hadn’t realised he didn’t speak English, and he hadn’t realised I don’t speak any Spanish. Some of the poker text books are like that. Way too complex and full of contradictions and hence not that useful to people starting out.
FOR ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS In an effort to give anyone who is currently just beginning to play online poker a simple guide to the dos and don’ts of Texas Hold’em I have set out ten hopefully helpful bullet points below.

TOP TEN TIPS 1. Learn the basics for free at the online poker schools and “play money” tables. All the major sites, including our own, have them and they are all extremely easy to follow point by point. 2. Graduate to low limit cash games to discover how differently players perform when real cash is involved. 3 .Understand the value of position at the table. The later your position, the more power you will have as you will be able to see what everyone else is going to do before you have to act yourself. 4. Never play above your financial comfort zone as it will restrict your ability to be aggressive. 5. Following logically on from number 4. Aggression in poker always pays in the long run. 6. Don’t drink while playing online. If you want to find out why the expensive way, try it. 7. Online play is high tech. Use it. Study hand histories. 8. Bluff sparingly and don’t become “known” for it. 9. Mix your play up as much as possible to stop opponents getting a fix on you. Be Mr or Mrs Unpredictable. 10. Focus. Don’t have your mobile phone on. Don’t watch television in between games and don’t multi-table until you are winning seven games out of ten at your chosen cash level.
FOR ADVANCED PLAYERS Q: Can you expect to be successful at H.O.R.S.E (Hold’em-Omaha-Razz-SevenCard and Eight or better) if you are weak at one of the games? A: Surprisingly-yes. Make sure you play tight and only go for it when you land a premium hand. Be careful not to get trapped. If you are good at all the other games in the H.O.R.S.E you can certainly ride through one weak game out of five.
