Picking a possible WSOP winner with good odds for an outsider bet
PICK A WINNER! I suppose setting yourself up as a poker pundit is becoming very similar to those toffs of the turf who predict who will win the Grand National or the Derby. The World Series of Poker 2006 and its likely $100,000,000 in prize money is looming large and most online poker fans are already debating in chat rooms who they think can steal the big events. Can’t see why I shouldn’t follow suit?
MAKE MINE A MAGICIAN I always like horse racing tipsters who choose an outsider and put their necks on the block so a punter can at least get some decent odds. Any coward can choose a favourite. I’d say a good outsider bet for a 2006 bracelet this year is Antonio “The Magician” Esfandiari. I recently did a piece about the Magic Man’s exploits at the table and his knuckle juggling with chips (always good, in-depth poker info in this column). More to the point Antonio’s money making skills have never really been in doubt. He reached no less than four final tables during 2005 following on from his spectacular “twin wins” at the World Poker Tour AND the World Series in 2004. What makes the Magician an outsider is he has started 2006 slowly and with the consequent lowered profile represents an extremely good bet as a dark horse slightly out of form. Like all good tipsters I’ll be able to tell you exactly why he failed if my prediction proves as lousy as my last online game of No Limit Hold’em. I now realise why it’s called No Limit. Sometimes there’s no limit to one’s ability (mine in this case) to overplay a pair of Jacks. Not exactly “magic” so learn at my expense.

WAITING FOR A TABLE On those rare occasions when you want to impress the wife or the girlfriend with that special table at a top class eatery we’ve all experienced the “long wait” for the table. Well poker at The Bellagio has now reached gourmet level. Pals of mine back from Las Vegas recently report having to wait for almost two hours to join a no limit table. Looks like online poker is the equivalent to a “takeaway! You get it quick, you get it hot and you get it when you want it and it’s cheap. I’m not sure I want to fly for ten hours squeezed between two morbidly obese **** with a popcorn addiction only to queue for two more hours to discover the hidden delicacy of being eaten alive by Bellagio regulars Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan currently specialising in the consumption of “imported fish”. Armed with this updated info, if you are headed to Las Vegas try the MGM Grand or Binion’s. More space, no waiting. Better yet, no Doyle, hopefully.
