The Down and Outs who are cashing in -- thanks to online poker!
HOMELESS NOT HELPESS Only in America! A new guerilla marketing phenomena is thriving on the streets of Seattle: BUMVERTISING! Yep! In the only country on earth where online gaming is supposed to be illegal, the homeless are being rewarded with sandwiches, drinks and cash handouts by entrepreneurs savvie enough to ask them to hold up huge banners proclaiming various gaming site dot coms at the entrances to major auto-route networks. Thousands of drivers an hour are being seduced to try their hand at Texas Hold’em when they get home in direct defiance of the Federal stance on the activity. The police are too busy to bother with such a minor misdemeanour so the trend looks set to spread nationwide. Where there’s a will there’s a way. In the end it’s the inspiration and will of the people that make America great, not its government.
POKER TERMS Here are a few poker terms we haven’t touched on before which will add clarity for new players. In this column we’ll start with A B C:
Active Hand: A hand that hasn’t been folded.
Alabama Knight Riders: Refers to the hand: K-K-K!
Angling: This is where a player will act out of turn with the intent of influencing the actions of opposing players so that they may bet or fold differently than they might otherwise have done had they not picked up on the angler’s signal. For example: An angler might signal a bet out of turn (by arranging his chips in a calculated manner etc) prompting the players before him not to bet or maybe even to fold. When the betting reaches the angler he or she may have succeeded in getting an opposing player to fold (mission accomplished) or they may just decide not to bet after all. This kind of play is unethical but not illegal and usually performed with considerable flair.
Back Door: This is when a Texas Hold’em player manages to unexpectedly complete a hand he wasn’t necessarily pursuing by good fortune on the turn and the river. Often refered to as a Back Door Straight or Flush etc.
Bait: Offering a small raise to coax out a re-raise from an opponent when you have a premium hand and want to build value into the pot.
Ballerina: This refers to a pair of twos as in the ballet term “tutu”.
Bump: This simply means to raise.
Check-Raise: A player checks, luring a raise out of an opponent. When the betting returns to the player who initially checked, he or she then raises. A check-raise is usually employed by a player with a premium hand looking to build up the pot.
