Are You Over-heating?

WATCH YOUR PRESSURE GAUGE
Many new players who initially do well at low limit games are surprised that they falter badly when they up their limits. The reason for this is not always the fact that players at higher levels of the game are more experienced. Of course confronting better players is an aspect of the problem. However, the important thing to note is how successful low limit players lose their otherwise natural aggression when they come under higher limit financial pressure. It’s a normal human response and the only way to avoid it is to make sure you don’t play at limits which invite pressure. If you’re out of your comfort zone there’s only one result. You’ll get uncomfortable and you’ll get poorer. When you’ve built up a healthy stack and you’re full of confidence. Then you’re ready to up the ante.

KNOW WHERE THE EXIT IS!
If you’re in a crowded theatre, cinema or plane you’ll always be aware of where the EXIT is in an emergency. If you’re having  a bad online session, don’t just bang on while you’re energy and attitude are descending at a rate of knots. EXIT the game. Come back the following night when your spirits are back up. A losing streak has an energy about it which you can only turn off by stopping.

E! HOLLYWOOD HOLD’EM!
With George Clooney and James Woods hosting the hottest Hollywood poker games these days, I guess it had to happen. The “E! Hollywood Hold’em!” TV show enters the homes of famous celebrities and pretends to offer you a fly-on-the-wall look at an ordinary social evening of poker like you and the boys might hold at home. Yeah, right. When did you last bet $5,000 on your hole cards without looking at them while the maid serves you caviar on biscuits and offers you a champagne finger bowl? Great entertainment. A little weak on any deep poker insights, unless cleavage framed in bling is what gives you a flush.

DOPEY, GRUMPY, AND HAPPY
Sometimes chemistry is almost as interesting as poker. You may be surprised to learn that the chemical which gives a heightened state of elation is not released to maximum effect when you flip over your hole cards and make those quads or complete that once-in-a-lifetime Royal Flush.

THE BIOLOGY OF THE BUZZ!
Apparently elation reaches its climax in our systems when we’ve launched a bluff that looks like it may come off. It’s that twilight zone between “Am I going to pull this off or not?” that gives poker players what they all refer to as “the buzz!”
The chemical in question? It’s called dopamine! Apparently biologists have proved all of the above to be true with “uncertainty elation” experiments on monkeys. My question is: How did they get chimps to play Texas Hold’em?
