Are poker robots cheating you at the big poker sites?
POKER BOTS ARE NOT A THREAT! The web loves conspiracy theories. It makes good entertainment. The poker robot software debate is reaching the same point the “cheating conspiracies” were at when online poker first took a serious hold on the global public. Well the big sites DON’T cheat. In 2006 that at least has become fairly obvious to everyone except people who live in cabins in the woods in South Carolina with an automatic weapon in every wardrobe and teach their offspring to shoot cats in case WAL MART goes bankrupt. Why would a mega billion dollar business cheat when it makes totally legal fortunes by raking hundreds of games of poker a minute? Poker sites may be the most honest institutions on the planet (not out of some higher sense of morality than the rest of us) but because honesty is their life blood. Would that it were the same for every business. The poker robot scare is evolving along similar lines to those initial “cheating conspiracies”.
WHAT POKER BOTS CAN AND CAN’T DO It is true that the very best robot programmes can keep an exact count of the cards seen and they can apply “probability theory” with a high degree of accuracy. This may give them a slight edge under certain circumstances over the average player in very low limit games. But here’s the important thing: They can’t replicate unpredictable human responses to events at the table. This returns the advantage to the human because a robot can only be as good as its programming which has to be based on a certain logic. If you have a wife, a husband, a friend or a girlfriend you’ll know that logic is not often part of their kit. That’s one thing. Beyond that the sites are very streetwise. Instead of treating the robot designers like the West treats North Korea, they socialise with them, employ them and bring them into the fold. Why? Same reason the CIA will employ whoever they need to get one jump ahead of their current adversary. Most of the big sites have the technical ability to overcome any of the developments the robot programmers create. Play happily in the knowledge you are in far greater danger from a dodgy dealer in a bricks and mortar poker room than you’ll ever be online even if you’re playing at PleaseConMeAtPokerItGetsMeOff.com.
