Chip Stack Attack, The Most Popular Poker Movie, and an FBI Poker Tip

WELL STACKED
Poker has its own peculiar form of logic. For example a newcomer might think,“If I’ve got a big stack of chips and a moderate to good hand I should bully the guy with a small stack and force him to fold.” Funny thing is, a lot of players with a small stack are often feeling a bit desperate and they’re more likely to fire back at you in reckless fashion to try and re-establish themselves in the game. If I have a moderate to good hand and a big stack, I’ll usually try to isolate another player with a big stack. Players who’ve amassed a big stack are often more protective of their hard earned gains and paradoxically more likely to fold into your aggression. See if this pans out in your experience once you’ve assessed all the other intel available.

‘ATCHET ‘ARRY!
Victor Chandler’s recent poll for the Daily Star surveyed over two thousand card playing film fans to uncover the most popular poker movie of all time. Unsurprisingly perhaps, “Rounders” came out on top with “The Sting” in second place, “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” in third and “Maverick” fourth. There were however some interesting side shows. Ed Norton was voted the film star poker players would most like to play against with Heather Graham, Matt Damon and Mel Gibson taking second, third and fourth places respectively. Best “poker scene” was judged to be the memorable “fake drunk” incident portrayed by Paul Newman in “Cool Hand Luke” with “Lock, Stock’s” cameo of Nick Moran losing out to ‘atchet ‘arry in Guy Ritchie’s classic getting a mention in despatches. As Steve McQueen took the best actor spot it was a surprise to find “Cincinnatti Kid” way down at sixth in the favourite film section. The section on “favourite poker quotes” saw my personal choice from Lancey (Edward G.) Howard not even making the top five but I stick by it as the best of all time because it’s the most useful to a new player, “Gets down to what it’s all about, doesn’t it? Making the wrong move at the right time!” Great advice from Cincinnatti’s “The Man”.

IMPORTANT FOOTNOTE
You learn something new about poker every day and this little tit-bit comes from an unimpeachable source. Namely the FBI! Apparently ex-FBI agent and poker player Joe Navarro has backroom evidence which proves the hands and the feet, in particular, don’t lie. Only your face has learned how to be dishonest and offer the world misleading expressions. Conclusion? If you see an opponent tapping his feet or jiggling his hands whilst trying to look bored or disinterested he’s either got his MP3 plugged in his ear or he’s got a premium hand!
